Is your Medicare Advantage plan ending in 2027? Letter, options and deadlines, what to do next

Is Your Medicare Advantage Plan Ending in 2027? Here’s What to Do

by | Aug 20, 2025 | Updated Oct 15, 2026 | Medicare Advantage, Service Area Reductions

Each year, carriers decide where to offer Medicare Advantage. When a plan stops serving your county, that’s called a service area reduction, and you get a letter. I’m hearing that 2027 will look a lot like recent years: not a collapse, but real pullbacks in some counties and some plan types. If you got a letter, read it today.

What Is a Service Area Reduction (SAR)?

A service area reduction means a carrier stops offering a plan in your county, ZIP code or state. Everyone in that plan loses it on December 31. Rural areas feel it the most, sometimes with only a couple of plans left to choose from.

Why Are Plans Leaving for 2027?

Plans make these choices based on payment rates, costs and which areas they can serve profitably. Industry analysts who track carrier filings report that several large carriers are trimming the number of counties they serve in 2027 and that at least one national carrier is leaving the individual Medicare Advantage market. One national carrier has said publicly that its 2027 exits affect roughly 600,000 members. My own estimate is that another 2 to 3 million people nationwide will have to find new coverage. That is an estimate, not an official count, and the analyst figures are not a federal count either. Your letter is what counts.

How Will You Know If Your Plan Is Ending?

You’ll get a written notice, usually by early October. It tells you the date your plan ends, whether you’ll be moved to another plan, and your enrollment options. If you haven’t seen a letter, check your Annual Notice of Change, because plan-ending news can arrive that way too. Here’s how to read your ANOC. More on plan termination letters.

What Are Your Options If Your Plan Ends?

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan. Check that your doctors and hospitals are in-network and your prescriptions are covered.
  • Go back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). You may have a right to buy certain Medigap plans without health questions for a limited time after your plan ends. The federal window generally starts 60 days before your plan coverage ends and runs no more than 63 days after it ends, so keep your termination letter. Ask for it by name, and see the Medigap birthday rule for how timing can work.
  • Add drug coverage. Original Medicare doesn’t include it. Pick a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage or a standalone drug plan.

If you do nothing, you can end up in a plan that doesn’t cover your doctors or medications, or with no drug coverage at all.

FAQs

What happens if I do nothing when my Medicare Advantage plan ends?

You aren’t moved automatically to a new plan that fits you. You could end up on Original Medicare with no drug coverage on January 1, or in a plan that doesn’t include your doctors.

Can I buy a Medigap plan if my Medicare Advantage plan ends?

Often yes. A plan ending can give you a limited window to buy certain Medigap plans without health questions. Ask which plans apply and when your window closes.

Is Medicare Advantage going away in 2027?

No. Medicare Advantage isn’t ending. Individual plans change or leave certain counties each year.

When is the deadline to choose a new plan?

December 7 for coverage starting January 1. After a plan ends, you also have a special enrollment period through the end of February 2027.
